In left to right order (in the photo):Derek Kingshott - Derek graduated from Zeeland West in 2008 as an accomplished student-athlete participating in basketball, football and track and field.   In basketball, Derek was a two time all conference player in the 2007 and 2008 season and was named to the BCAM All-State Team following the 2007-08 season.   Similar to basketball, Derek was a two time all conference football player, two time member of the Holland Sentinel All-Area team, member of the Grand Rapids Press Dream Team in 2006 and a member of the Zeeland West State Championship football team in 2006.   On the track, Derek was all conference in 2008 and was a member of the Track and Field State Championship Relay teams in both the 1600 and 3200.   Derek also excelled in the classroom graduating #4 in this class.   Following graduation from Zeeland West, Derek went on to a career as a student-athlete at Hillsdale for 1 year playing foo

Zeeland West Varsity Dux took Wednesday's game in dramatic fashion, with a 5-4 walk-off victory over Lakeview Varsity Spartans. The game was tied at four in the bottom of the eighth when Madison Wyckoff doubled, scoring one run.Bri Kamer collected four hits in four at bats in the win. Megan Strabbing collected three hits in three at bats, as Zeeland West Varsity Dux defeated Lakeview Varsity Spartans 7-2 on Wednesday. Strabbing hit a home run to center field in the first inning, singled in the second inning, and singled in the fourth inning.Madison Wyckoff struck out 11 batters on the day. The Zeeland West Boys Varsity track team won the tri-meet against Holland Christian 96-41 and Spring Lake 107-30 away at Holland Christian on a sunny Tuesday afternoon. Star performers of the Dux included, Sr. Keaton Hendricks placing 1st in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.82 and placed 1st again in the 300m hurdles with a time of 39.80. Sr. Trey Sloothak placed 2nd in long jump with a distance of 21’6.25. Jr. Keagan Smith placed 1st in the 800m run with a time of 2:01.89, and hitting a PR. Sr. Reagan Page vaulted 13’0 feet.  Assistant Varsity Coach Jordan Lambert commented, “The boys ran well as a team and pushed through together. Most boys got PR’s and they put in good effort putting us in a good spot for conference and regionals.” Sloothak mentioned, “I did the 100 and long jump which went pretty well. West Varsity Golf takes 9th out of 24 at Flint Powers Invitational

The West varsity golf team placed 9th at the Flint Powers Invitational today, held at The Flint Golf Club.  The team set a new school record for an away 18 score of 318.  Mike Girman led the Dux with a 77.  Logan Bomers added a 78, Graham VanDort a 81, and Tyler Baumann a 82.  The team travels to Winding Creek on Friday to compete in the OK Black Zeeland East Jamboree.

Zeeland West won the Von Ins Invite at West Ottawa Saturday morning in cool but sunny conditions. The Dux finished with 2143 points taking 1st place. In field and running events many athletes did as many as they could to get points for the Dux.  Standout performers for the Dux included, Sr. Jordin Robelin and Lucy Budnik, who both got PR’s in the 200m. Jr. Amaya Brott, who got first in the 300m hurdles and a SB. and Towne, who got a PR in the 800m. Coach Kenemer stated, “We had several athletes step up and run events they haven’t run before to help the team. Overall it was a competitive and fun day.” Fr. Avery Towne said, “The meet went really well and I was very happy that I could PR. I think being positive and encouragement from the girls on the team help me do well in my events.”

The West varsity golf team placed 5th at the Ottawa County Invitational yesterday afternoon at The Meadows of G.V.S.U. Logan Bomers led the Dux with a 77 and finished 7th out of 66 players.  Mike Girman added an 80, Tyler Baumann a 83, while Graham VanDort contributed a 86.  The team travels to The Flint Golf Club on Monday to compete in the Flint Powers Charger Invitational.

On Wednesday, April 30th, the Zeeland Girls Varsity Lacrosse team took on Mona Shores on their home field. The Sailors held a tough offense, putting up many shots on goal against the Birds. Zeeland’s goalie, Sr. MJ Romero, had ten saves throughout the game. Soph. Audrina Knoper led the Birds with seven shots on goal, Sr. Audrey Durham contributed with six, and Jr. Madison Helder attempted three. At half time, the Birds trailed the Sailors 0-7. Coach Brooke VanderStelt stated, “Their goalie is very quick and very intense. We really struggled with placing the ball in the right spot.” The Birds never gave up, but their efforts fell short against Mona Shores' defense. Knoper reflected, “We attempted to play our best as a team, but we fell apart in the end. I’m proud of the team's effort and our ability to remain good sports.” The Girls Varsity Lacrosse team will go on to play against Kalamazoo Central High School on Friday, May 2.

The Zeeland West Boys Varsity Track team scored 98.5 against Unity on Tuesday (Unity scored 38.5). Zeeland West Varsity held first place for almost all of the evening. The night saw many Dux wins. Jr. Clayton Ramsdell, who set a new PR of 6’4” on the high jump; Sr. Ben Greshaw, who placed first in the 400 meter (52.48a); and Jr. Sam Taylor, who placed first in the 1600 meter (4.56.42a).amsdell was stuck at a' 6'2  jump and was looking to get higher. Stating, “I hadn't jumped that high in months; I had plateaued at' 6'2. It feels good to beat my goals. Ramsdell went up to 6’4” on his jump Tuesday. We asked what helped Ramsdell get over the 6 '2 spot, he told us “Running faster helped me a lot, and being pushed by my coach.”Head Varsity Coach Phil Hoover commented, “We had certain goals in mind for today, for each event, and we reached most of them. The Zeeland West Girls’ Varsity Soccer team lost to East in a conference game by a score of 0-1 on April 28. Their Head Coach, Ben Hondorp, said, “We defended well for most of the match, putting out fires and managing the pressure put on by East, but we struggled to find any sort of rhythm and lacked connectivity on offense. East is a good team., They were the more aggressive, assertive, and decisive team and deserved the win. We exerted a lot of energy in the first half, and kind of ran out of gas in the second half. We did generate a couple of really good chances, just could not find the back of the net. I’m proud of our team's effort, just fell short.” There were no goals for the girls of Zeeland West, but they fought hard, especially with a couple of their key players out due to injury. The Zeeland West Girls’ Varsity Soccer team beat Holland in a conference game by a score of 3-0 on April 25.  Their Head Coach, Ben Hondorp, said, “We played really well on Friday against Holland. One of our better overall matches of the season. We possessed well in the midfield and created several really good chances. We were patient and poised with our attack, pushing numbers forward and creating combinations that made Holland scramble. Defensively, we were solid and didn’t really give up many quality looks at goal. Overall, I’m really happy with our performance.” Sr. Jordyn Klaasen scored twice, once in the first half and the other in the second half, and Sr. Madelyn VanDort scored once against the Dutch of Holland. Sr. Madelyn VanDort said, “Our game on Friday against Holland was very memorable! Zeeland West lost to Unity Christian at home Tuesday night 45.5-91.5. Stand out performers for the Dux included Jr. Amaya Brott, who set a season record and finished 2nd in 300m hurdles. Soph. Kaila Keeler set a PR in the 3200m. Coach Aaron Kenemer stated, “In general I just thought we had a competitive spirit today with lots of PR’s and encouragement from the team. We are having fun here and we can see the team cheering each other on.” Brott said, “I thought my meet today went well, especially in the 300m hurdles. I got a season record which I am proud of. The team is always very encouraging and it motivates me to push myself.”

The Zeeland Girls' Lacrosse Team dominated 19-2 in their game on Friday (April 25) against Jenison High School. Zeeland West player Saige Canfield said, “Going into this game, we knew from past experience it would be one of our easier games, but we still put our best foot forward and pushed until the end. We tried out new things and let girls who haven't scored yet get a chance to. Overall, it went well.” Leading the team statistically was Sr. Audrey Durham with 7 points, Skylar Hundley with 2 assists, and Maggie Albrecht with 5 ground balls. At half-time, the girls were leading 14-1. Coach Brooke Vanderstelt stated, “It was a great game for us. We were able to put our best foot out there and make sure all of our players got a chance to play. The West varsity golf team won the OK Black Spring Lake Jamboree held at Spring Lake Country Club today.  The team broke the 9-hole away school record score with a 152.  Logan Bomers was the co-medalist with a two under par - 35.  Mike Girman added a 37, Mikey Fuller a 39, and Graham VanDort contributed a 41.  The team travels to Diamond Springs tomorrow to compete in the OK Black Hamilton Jamboree.
